First Man

First Man 1961. NASA Neil Armstrong is an experiment pilot piloting an X-15 rocket-powered spaceplane. The plane accidentally crashes into the atmosphere. Although he manages to land the plane in the Mojave Desert His colleagues have expressed concern that his recent record of mishaps is due to distractedness.

His 2-year-old daughter Karen is being treated for a brain tumor. Armstrong, desperate to save his daughter Karen, keeps a detailed record of her symptoms and investigates potential treatments. However, she died shortly afterward. In a state of grief and fearing that he’s been grounded, Armstrong applies for Project Gemini and is accepted to NASA Astronaut Group 2.. With his wife Janet, as well as their son Rick, Armstrong moves to Houston along with other astronaut families. He befriends Elliot See, another civilian test pilot and Ed White. As Armstrong begins training, Deke Slayton reminds the astronauts of on the importance of the Gemini program, as the Soviet Union had completed every step of the Space Race ahead of the United States. Armstrong and Janet have a son who is a second, Mark.

After the Soviets have completed the first Extravehicular Activity (EVA) in 1965, Armstrong is informed by the United States that he will be in charge of Gemini 8 with David Scott the pilot. Armstrong is devastated by the recent loss of See and Charles Bassett in the T38 crash. Armstrong and Scott succeed in launching on Gemini 8 and connect to the Agena target vehicle however, shortly after, a malfunction occurs that causes the spacecraft’s wheels to spin at a rate that is becoming increasingly risky. After almost blacking out, Armstrong activates the RCS thrusters and safely aborts the mission. Although he initially faced criticism, NASA determined that the crew was not at fault and the mission was classified as a success.

Later, White reveals that he was selected for his participation in the Apollo 1 mission together with Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee. In a launch test on January 27, 1967 the Apollo 1 crew was killed in a fire kills White and the Apollo 1 crew. Armstrong learns the news while representing NASA in the White House. After the accident that killed Armstrong, the possibility of his death was raised by the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle, Slayton informs Armstrong that he’s been selected to be the commander of Apollo 11. This will likely be the first moon landing. As the mission nears, Neil becomes increasingly preoccupied and emotionally disconnected from his family. Prior to the launch, Janet confronts Armstrong about the possibility that he may not make it through the flight. She insists on him explaining the risks of the mission to their young sons. After educating them on the dangers he is facing, Armstrong says goodbye to his family.

Three days after launch, Apollo 11 enters lunar orbit. Aldrin and Armstrong landed in the Moon Module Eagle to start their landing. The landing site terrain turns out to be much rougher than anticipated, requiring Armstrong to control the spacecraft manually of the spacecraft. Armstrong is able to land Eagle successfully at an alternative location with less than 30 seconds of fuel left. After setting his foot on the Moon, Armstrong utters his famous phrase, “That’s one small step for (a) man, but one huge leap for humanity.” Then, he puts Karen’s wristband inside Little West. After their mission is completed the astronauts go back to home and are taken to the quarantine. In this room, they watch footage of John F. Kennedy’s 1962 speech ” We choose to go to the Moon” and Janet and Armstrong share a moment together.
